Wolverley

While looking at sites, I'd found there was a very good discount to be had, if we joined the Camping and Caravan Club. They have a number of sites around the country and even better, another discount as we are both 60+.

Wolverley is one of their sites, set on the old Army Camp which became one of the largest Hospital Sites in WW2. Of the 10,000 battle casualties treated there, only 4 died. Bob Hope brought his show and performed there.l

Handy for home, we decided to join up and virtually saved the membership fee in our stay there. Excellent shower and toilet facilities and even a large recreation room in one of the old Army Huts.

The Lock pub, on the Canal, of course is next door and the canal work is beautiful, as is the little known, tiny, village of Wolverley.

Many of the houses and cottages in the village have walls partially consisting of the sandstone cliffs and have rooms, which really are basically caves.

John Baskerville, one of our greatest printers and whos name will be recognised as a Typeface today, was born there in 1706 and the village boasts arguably the prettiest stretch of the River Stour, in its relatively short 25 mile course.

We enjoyed being there however they have now closed for the Winter but we are planning another stay next Spring.

The heart of the village. To be honest, there isn't a great deal more.
